MONTHS OF THE ABAKHOONE PEOPLE




1. Dulyenge -(January)-Dry rivers, crocodiles caught and killed people while wading across drive rivers


2. Muungu -(February) -First heavy windy rains allowing farmers to dig up bushes in readiness for     planting


3. Mwerasi - (March)- Beginning of the planting season


4. Nangeka - (April)- Rainy season with plenty of fish. White birds (sea gulls) were also seen in plenty


5. Unondaye - (May)- Mothers keep advising their children not to follow them into the wet and dewy fields during the harvest of beans and peas
 

6. Munanwa/Alenya - (June)- No rains. Farmers pray for rains. Bees leave sticky pollen on crops. Pollen is called "Alenya"
 

7.Namafumbie - (July)- Very cold month and cloudy too.
 

8. Ofwomole - (August)- The gusty short rains pound the earth (Ofwomole from the word "khufumula" meaning to pound something with force). The rivers flood due to heavy rains the upper lands near Mt. Elgon but there is plenty of fish.
 
9. Fulula - (September)- After harvest, the herdsboys ravage through the fields collected the remnants (Okhufululusia- to ravage)
 

10. Mukoma - (October)- Deciduous trees such as figs and Milicia excelsa (mvule tree) shade off their leaves
 

11. Mubiru - (November)- Clear country. No growth on pasture and the harvest stocks are running out.
 
12. Lusisi – (December)- Easterly cold/hot winds.
