THE LINEAGE OF CHIEF SUDI NAMACHANJA

Most of you might have come across distorted historical material claiming that Ekobi, the great grandfather of Chief Sudi Namachanja was a wondering Mutura boy who adopted by a barren wife of  wealthy Mukhoone man by the name Otunga. I have personally come across this kind of talk and I find it to be misleading.

I have also come across some Bakhoone in Bungoma claiming that Abakhoone came from Uganda into Matayos in Busia. This is also wrong.

Below I will present to you the family tree of Sudi Namachanja which stretches several generals back as it was documented by R.T.K. Scully of Hartwick College in 1970. I will start with the the Sirwa because the others I had mentioned them in an earlier post entitled "The Genealogy of Abakhoone".

Sirwa the father of Membwe.
Membwe the father of Wekesa
Wekesa the father of Kayoyo and Bilachi
Kayoyo the father of Bule, Otunga and Wakoko
Bule the father of Ekobi
Ekobi the father of Khisa, Mukwana and Mabonga
Khisa the father of Namachanja and Wandabusi
Namachanja the father of Sudi, Mulati, Mukanda, Mukenya, Watoya and Lukorito
Sudi the father of Nabangi, Makokha, watoya, Mulati, Simiyu( also called Cardinal Otunga).

Sudi had 70 sons and 80 daughters in total. According to an account provided by Sudi's grandson, Omugonja Sudi Wandabusi in March 2018, Namachanja, the father of Sudi lived and died at a place called Mukhuma in present day Kabula Ward of Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County. When Sudi took over as Chief of the Bukusu, he first set up camp (Kambi) at Kabula. His original homestead is located in this area. Sudi would however later on move across river Sio to eventually settle at Tulumba area where he set up his lukooba. I will later share with you the full details of Sudi's many wives and children. Here, let me mention the three sons of Sudi that he left at Kabula, each born to a different mother. There was Karoli Sudi, who donated land for Kabula High School, Kabula Primary and the Kabula Catholic Church. There was Matayo Sudi (Notice the name Matayo from Matayo of Busia) and then there was Omukhale Sudi (my late grandfather). Of Sudi's Brothers, Mulati and Watoya remained at a place now called Watoya (after Watoya Namachanja). Mukanda moved and settled in Nalondo area of Kabuchai Constituency.

All Sudi's ancestors upto Khisa were born in Bunambo (Ebukhoone) (where most Bakhoone in Bungoma like referring to as Esamia).  Actually as I had explained in earlier post on this blog, Esamia was a location that Bunambo Kingdom of Abakhoone annexed from Abasamia. In fact Ekobi and Khisa were born and raised in the village called Ebusamba near Ndekwe river. All the other ancestors prior to Ekobi died and were buried in Bunambo. It is Ekobi who was the first person of Chief Sudi's lineage to come to Bukusuland.

Now let me present to the lineage of the other two sons of Ekobi: Mukwana and Mabonga.
Mabonga was the father of Wandabusi and Kisululia.
*Wandabusi was the father of Masikini
Masikini was the father of Masaura and Makhali (today distorted as Makali)
**Mukhwana was the father of Walulu
Walulu was the father of Sikhandulo, Sikolia, Lufalula, Misiko and Sikwembe.

Let me also present lineages of Sudi's brothers.
Mulati (sudi's brother) was the father of Sikata
Watoya (another Sudi's brother) was the father of Wanyonyi
Lukorito (another brother of Sudi had 15 sons who I am sure most of you can identify and build up this lineage).

As I said Wekesa the son of Membwe had two sons: Kayoyo and Bilachi. Sudi descended from Kayoyo.

Now here are some of the descendants of Bilachi the son of Wekesa the son of Membwe.

Bilachi was the father of Bwiwi
Bwiwi the father of Wekesa II
Wekesa II the father of Membwe II (up to here, all these lived in Bunambo and still have known descendants there)
Membwe II was the father of Situma.
Situma was born in Bunambo, but he was also the first descendant of Bilachi to arrive in Bukusuland. Meaning that Situma could have been a cousin to Ekobi.

I will later on present the family tree for easy visibility. Otherwise the point I am making is that Ekobi was Omukhoone who was born in Ebusamba near Ndekwe river and he was not a lost boy who was picked by Otunga's barren woman as some Bukusu historians such as Makila (1983) have claimed. I will later explain the relationship between Otunga, Wakoko and Ekobi.

  2. Orio muno Omugonja. we should never lose these historical facts. We shall have nothing to tell our children.

I will not be surprised if Sudi named his Matayo after his cousin matayo Mulase Walusala in Busia. Sudi and Nabutola actually retained very strong links with their cousins in Busia.

I will take this information and add a paragraph in the article on the blog and acknowledge you as the source of this information. When you read that article, you will find your name acknowledged there.

    Thank you

  3. For other references to Namachanja read: "Two Accounts of the Chetambe War of 1895, " by RTK Scully in The International Journal of African Historical Studies, VII, 3 (1975). The eye witness accounts of the British armed invasion of Bukusu, which destroyed Lumboka and Chetambe forts, include a testimony by Mukisu Kaikai who was a boy living at Lumboka Fort (on page 486): "Those who lived along the route taken by the troops to Chetambe had to flee. Even Namachanja, the chief, had to run away to the village of his maternal uncles at Nalondo." Also a testimony by Sikala Mururumbu who, as a boy, fled to Chetambe with his father Namanda from Ngachi, their walled village in Siritanya (on page 491): "Later, after the war, Namachanja, the chief of the Bukusu, was told to go and look for captured women at Mumia's capital. Chief Mumia asked Namachanja to announce to the Bukusu that captured women and children would be handed over to their families at his (Namachanja's) village in Kabula.
