LEADERSHIP AMONG ABAKHOONE

Opetu  was title of the king. This was an inherited position among the house of Abakhoone abang'ang'a. It was the eldest house of Aabakhoone clan. But most of the famous warriors who used to lead war in the field in abakhoone army for example Khudumbaye, Esakha, Ekoobi and Matsaaba were of the house of abamembwe. The famous Mufuula who was the one-eyed general of ferocious Bakhoone army was omukhoone mumembwe. Abamembwe were god blacksmiths and brave hunters. They used to test their bravery by hunting hippopotamus in Lake Victoria. From the house abaimini there was Ndubulire Ekwachi who was equally a famous warrior Bakhoone army.
When I asked some of the elders in Budalang’i Abakhoone Ababembwe house used to be involved in the Kingdom affairs more than most of the other houses, I was told that it is because Ng’ang’a and Mubembwe were children of the same mother.
Abakhoone abaimini were the house of priests. Until today they are the ones who lead the sacrifices at the Shrines of Sumba and Ndekwe. The current custodian of the Sumba oracles is Charles Muyinda, who resides at Esiginga village of of Lunyofu sublocation in Budalang’i. It is at Lunyofu where the Sumba festival is held to date.
